Wildlife

In the fall and winter the Bay is a popular stop-over for many species of ducks. Come hunting season I am besieged by request from my friends who hunt for scouting reports.

I hunt with my camera and my targets are unending: black bears forage the acorns in fall and the blueberries in the spring; white tail deer abound and, indeed, must be hunted to keep the population in healthy order; there are bald eagle nesting and perfect habitat for raptors like hawks and kites.

Wading birds like great egrets, blue herons and all the smaller herons make a good living in the shallow waters filled with mullet and other forage from eels to crawfish.

In the fall, river otters come to eat the clams and cold-stunned mullets. In the spring bull alligators croak to stake out their territories. Raccoons scour the shoreline at low tide, foxes patrol the shadows and great horned owls hunt on silent wings.
